Today's Proverb: Chapter 7

Warning Against the Adulteress

Today's Proverb is from a father to a son, urging him to avoid the temptation of the adulteress. I think this Proverb can be applied to women as well, as an admonishment to avoid the seduction of men.

Moreover, it is a warning to all mankind that sin is seductive and wishes to lure us in, but in the end, if we yield to temptation, it leads to death (verse 22). My old pastor would say, "Sin takes us farther than we planned to go,, and keeps us longer than we planned to stay."

Proverbs 7

Warning Against the Adulteress
1 My son, keep my words
and store up my commands within you.

2 Keep my commands and you will live;
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.

3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.

More encouragement to memorize scripture. Seriously consider using index cards to memorize scripture everyday. You will be blessed tremendously by it!

7 I saw among the simple,
I noticed among the young men,
a youth who lacked judgment.

8 He was going down the street near her corner,
walking along in the direction of her house

9 at twilight, as the day was fading,
as the dark of night set in.

It is possible to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some places we really ought not be. I think this was the case, for this young man. If we are tempted with a particular sin (drinking, smoking, sex, theft, etc.) there are places we ought not even go.

10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.

11 (She is loud and defiant,
her feet never stay at home;

What a description! That describes many of the popular images of women in our culture. Think about it. Make sure it does not describe us.

21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
she seduced him with her smooth talk.

Salesmen aren't the only people whose words we ought to be cautious off. If you are single (or married) and a man is approaching you with smooth talk (I call it game, my mom might call it jive), proceed with caution. See next verse for why.

22 All at once he followed her
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer stepping into a noose

23 till an arrow pierces his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
little knowing it will cost him his life.

27 Her house is a highway to the grave,
leading down to the chambers of death.

All sin leads to death. This is why we needed a Savior. Please check your lifestyle against God's Word.
